Vos and Morongell win Darlington, Hartsville Middle spelling bees

Sixth grader Hayden Vos became champion of the Darlington Middle School Spelling Bee last week after a lively, seven-round competition. Across Darlington County School District, Hartsville Middle School named sixth grader Kody Morongell its spelling bee champion.

Both students advanced to the Pee Dee Regional Spelling Bee at Francis Marion University later this month.

In Hartsville, Morongell leapt in the air, hands raised, after correctly spelling “hearth” to win. He celebrated in front of students, family and faculty who watched the contest’s pool of 55 spellers whittled down over the course of an hour and a half.

At the school level, the school decides the method by which a spelling bee champion is selected.

The Pee Dee Regional Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Pee Dee Education Center. The event will be held Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. in Chapman Auditorium on the campus of Francis Marion University. Morongell and Vos will compete against 41 other school winners.

The winner of the regional competition will qualify to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Nearly 300 students are invited each year to the national spelling bee, which is held in May.
