For about two hours Friday afternoon, starting about 5 p.m., Dominion Church at 1030 Pearl St. in Darlington held a gas giveaway at the Sav-Way Station across the street from the church. Pastor Kyle Meyer said the church deliberately did not publicize the event, wanting it to be a “pop-up” event, and relying entirely on word of mouth (and cellphones) to let people know it was happening. Meyer said about 200 people total were given $30 of gas each. He estimated the church gave away 1,400 gallons of gas. “It exploded,” Meyer told the News & Press on Saturday. He said that, in the spirit of the Easter season, “We wanted to alleviate that pressure from our gas prices” for as many people as possible. He said that at one point, traffic was backed up more than a mile. He said the church could have chosen any site for the event, but went with Sav-Way since it was next door and “I wanted (the event) to be in the city of Darlington.” — BOBBY BRYANT.
