Nunn promoted to assistant college counselor at Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School

Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School announces that social studies teacher Weston Nunn has been promoted to the role of Assistant College Counselor.
“Trinity-Byrnes’s growth over the last few years has made adding a second college counselor a necessity,” said Head of School Ed Hoffman. “Since enrollment has increased, we wanted to make sure that students could still receive the individual attention they need as they prepare for their college future. We are thrilled that Weston has accepted this new position, because he is so invested in our students’ success.”

Nunn has taught at the middle school, high school, and college levels since 2009, and has been at Trinity-Byrnes since 2014. He has taught World History, World Religions, Middle East History, and AP European History, and in 2016 he was selected as teacher of the year. Nunn’s new purview includes planning school trips to college campuses, hosting visits by admissions counselors from colleges and universities at Trinity-Byrnes, and assisting students in navigating the process of selecting and applying to college. To prepare for the new role, he attended a multi-day counselor training seminar in July, and toured 18 college campuses across Tennessee, Mississippi, and Florida.

“I’m very grateful to the board and the administration at Trinity-Byrnes for entrusting me with my new responsibilities,” Nunn said. “Being an advocate for young people is both a pleasure and a vocation for me, and my experience teaching and tutoring has prepared me for this new role. I really do enjoy getting in the trenches with students as they work on essays and research projects, and I’m looking forward to continuing one-on-one work with them as they consider and apply to the colleges that are right for them. I want them to be well informed, and to know I’m in their corner cheering for them and supporting them the whole way as they make one of the biggest decisions of their young lives.”

Nunn plans to emphasize the importance of having options in the application process.

“I want to encourage students to cast their nets broadly and apply to a mix of schools they would like to attend: in-state and out-of-state, public and private, big and small. I want them to have choices, so that when all the cards are on the table, especially financial aid packages, the students can be the ones saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to colleges. This flips the script on the whole admissions process.”
