Fourth Circuit Solicitor Will Rogers says a man has been sentenced to 40 years in a 2020 Hartsville killing that was sparked by a Facebook post.
Rogers said Dabry James, 22, was convicted by a Darlington County jury on April 13 in the February 2020 murder of Floyd Stewart Jr., 29, of Hartsville. In addition to murder, James was also convicted of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, unlawful possession of a handgun and grand larceny.
Rogers said Stewart had confronted James regarding a Facebook post by James. Stewart was unarmed and no physical altercation occurred. When Stewart turned to leave after the exchange of words, James pulled a handgun and shot Stewart in the back of the head, Rogers said. Stewart fell to the ground face first and James stood over him and shot four more times into the victim’s head, the prosecution said. The killing was witnessed by multiple individuals who testified at trial, including family members of the defendant. Prosecutors said that “children were getting off the school bus within sight of the victim’s body.”
