Lamar High School: Shaniyah Singleton

Shaniyah Singleton, 18, of Lamar, graduating from Lamar High School:
“You have to stay humble and stay focused in school because it’s all going to pay off in the end. You have to keep focused on everything from your 9th-grade year to your senior year, because you don’t want to fall behind and then come up short your senior year. … After high school, I’m going into the Army. My job is a 92-Alpha, which is an automated logistical specialist, which is dealing with supply. My basic (training) is at Fort Jackson. … I really didn’t want to enlist until my junior year. My freshman year and my sophomore year, I was like, no, I’m not going to go into the military because I don’t want to get shot. But certain jobs (are different), and I didn’t know about that until I started doing more research about it. … After I do my four years’ active duty, I plan to go to college and major in early childhood education. … I’m part of the Darlington County Youth Leadership Program … I’ve been part of Upward Bound for two years … and I’m an active member in my church.”
