It’s hard to walk anywhere in Darlington and not notice the efforts of the volunteers in the Darlington Garden Club and the Beautification Committee.
Wherever you go – from the rose garden and flower beds around the city offices and old houses on Pearl Street, to the Median on Main Street, the entrance on the Lamar Highway, the attractive garden spot in front of Vaughn Insurance Agency, the pots around the Square – all of these are examples of the hard work of these volunteers.
Darlington said “thank you” in a meaningful way at the Chamber of Commerce Awards banquet when the prestigious Community Pride Award was presented jointly to these two groups.
Cathy and Charles Bailey won the Darlington Garden Club members of the year award. A former commercial nursery manager, Cathy’s knowledge of horticulture runs deep, and Charles has been able to fix even the most stubborn irrigation system. This team has led much of the efforts of the Darlington Garden Club this past year.
The Grand Old Post Office was the venue for the banquet with food provided by South of Pearl and flower arrangements and centerpieces volunteered by members of the Darlington Garden Club. Anna Dewitt, Howard Nettles and Brooke Sylvester with the Chamber of Commerce organized a first-rate event.
