Darlington High School boys basketball Coach Brad Knox brought his winning philosophy off the hardwood and into the community this summer, hosting his “Expect To Win” youth basketball camp at the Darlington Recreation Department’s Harmon Baldwin Gymnasium, located at 300 Sanders Street.
The camp drew young athletes eager to sharpen their skills, but Coach Knox made clear from the outset that the program’s mission reaches far beyond basketball. Designed to develop young people in the classroom, on the court, and in life, “Expect To Win” offered campers a well-rounded experience grounded in mentorship, teamwork, and personal growth.
Participants received hands-on instruction covering shooting techniques, dribbling movements, passing options, and strategic teamwork. Competitive team games were woven throughout the camp to reinforce collaboration and communication in a real-game context.
“The goal is to teach our youth how to work together,” Coach Knox explained. “Basketball is a vehicle for teaching life lessons — discipline, resilience, and the power of collective effort.”
Campers left not only with sharper basketball fundamentals but also with a deeper appreciation of how individual excellence contributes to team success.
Coach Knox’s approach to coaching has long reflected a broader commitment to positive role modeling and community investment. Rather than focusing solely on athletic achievement, he emphasizes developing young people as students, athletes, and citizens — a philosophy that permeated every aspect of the “Expect To Win” camp, where technical skill development was paired with lessons about character, leadership, and personal growth.
“Young people need mentors who believe in their potential,” Coach Knox stated. “My responsibility extends beyond teaching basketball — it’s about showing them what it means to be a positive force in their community.”
Coach Knox’s dedication to youth development is backed by an impressive track record of success. In 2021, he guided the Darlington High School Varsity Girls basketball team to a Lower State Runners-Up finish. His boys program has since reached even greater heights: in 2024, Coach Knox led the team to a Lower State Championship and a State Championship Runners-Up finish, while also sending former student-athletes on to college.
His excellence has earned him multiple Region Coach of the Year honors, a North-South All-Star coaching selection, and recognition as the former Morning News Girls and Boys Coach of the Year.
Coach Knox is already looking ahead, with plans to host another “Expect To Win” camp in July. For Darlington youth and their families, the opportunity to learn from one of the area’s most accomplished coaches — and one of its most committed community mentors — is one well worth taking.
