Darlington native honored with Quilt of Valor Feb. 12

Sgt. Maj. (retired) Freddie A. Lighty Jr., formerly of Darlington, was honored by the Quilt of Valor Foundation on Feb. 12 in West Point, Ga.
The Quilt of Valor Foundation appreciates the service and sacrifice of those who have served in the Armed Forces and protects our freedoms. The organization’s mission is to “cover” Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
Lighty served in the Army from 1983 until his retirement in 2010.
He is a veteran of the Gulf War, including Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. He received a Bronze Star Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
Lighty resides in LaGrange, Ga., and is the son of the late Freddie A. Lighty Sr. and Elma D. Lighty of Darlington. He has one sister, Janet Damon of Florence, and a daughter, Kiara Williams of Swainsboro, Ga.
