A hometown connection is making waves far beyond the Pee Dee.

Dr. Nia Johnson, a proud native of Darlington, has been nominated for the 2025 Heart of Charlotte Award for Community Engagement Excellence, an honor recognizing outstanding efforts to connect universities with pressing community health needs. The daughter of Albert and Arlinda Johnson, Dr. Johnson continues to call Darlington her “home forever,” carrying the values instilled in her local upbringing into her work in North Carolina.

Dr. Johnson serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Assistant Program Director of the Master’s Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Program at Northeastern University’s Charlotte campus. She also holds the role of Community and Belonging Lead, helping shape a campus culture centered on connection and service.

Dr. Johnson is also extremely proud of her son, Nicholas Johnson, who works in the IT Department of the Darlington County School District.

Her Heart of Charlotte nomination highlights her leadership in launching the university’s first Speech-Language Pathology program in Charlotte and building it into a model of community-integrated healthcare education. From the outset, her focus has been on creating lasting partnerships that address real and often unmet needs across the region.

Under her guidance, the program has established collaborative relationships with public schools, YMCAs, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system, and area colleges and universities. These partnerships have expanded access to speech-language services while giving graduate students valuable hands-on experience in diverse community settings.

Dr. Johnson has also helped develop specialty clinics designed to serve vulnerable populations, including an Aphasia Clinic for stroke survivors and the Speak Out Parkinson’s Clinic. In addition, pediatric speech-language services have been intentionally structured to reach historically underserved communities where access to care has often been limited.

A key component of her work has been fostering interprofessional healthcare collaborations across Charlotte’s educational institutions. By encouraging cooperation among disciplines, she has strengthened the delivery of care while modeling teamwork for future healthcare professionals.

Her nominator noted that Dr. Johnson’s leadership goes beyond establishing programs. Instead, it centers on cultivating relationships rooted in respect, reciprocity, and a shared commitment to community well-being. That philosophy has helped ensure the sustainability of services while maintaining meaningful engagement between the university and the broader Charlotte community.

In addition to the Heart of Charlotte nomination, Dr. Johnson was recently selected as a Professional Member in the Speech-Language Pathology Academy, Class of 2026, within the National Academies of Practice. The organization is the nation’s longest-standing nonprofit, interdisciplinary group dedicated to advising governmental bodies on interprofessional healthcare collaboration.

For Darlington residents, Dr. Johnson’s achievements represent more than professional accolades. They reflect the enduring impact of small-town roots and the power of carrying community values into broader arenas of influence.
