Bullet strikes Hartsville City councilman’s vehicle
A bullet hit Hartsville City Councilman Bryson Caldwell’s SUV on June 5 while he was parked in front of a convenience store just outside the Hartsville city limits.
Caldwell told the News & Press that he heard gunfire as he was leaving the store at Bobo Newsom Highway and South 5th Street. He said about five shots were fired from the direction of two people having an argument in front of a store next to the convenience store.
“I was shocked,” he told the News & Press. “My gut reaction was to hit the deck.” He said he crouched down on all fours. He later found that a bullet had struck the passenger side of his vehicle.
The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office said no one at the scene was hurt. There was no word on arrests. Caldwell said it still makes him angry to think about, but said this shows the need for more funding for law enforcement so they can increase patrols. Caldwell was seeking the Democratic nomination for S.C. House District 62 in Tuesday’s primaries.
