Founding president of Francis Marion University passes away
FLORENCE – Dr. Walter Douglas “Doug” Smith, Francis Marion University’s beloved founding president, has passed away.
Smith, who served the university from its opening in 1970 through 1983, died last weekend in a Columbia, S.C. hospital. He was 99.
Newman chosen as DCSD Superintendent
Dr. Tim Newman will be the new superintendent of the Darlington County School District. The Darlington County Board of Education voted tonight to extend an offer to Newman, who accepted via conference call. Newman is currently the superintendent of Orangeburg Consolidated School District 4.
FMU Trustees approve resolutions to help combat teacher shortage
Thursday night, the Francis Marion Board of Trustees unanimously approved three resolutions, two of which they hope will help combat the K-12 teacher shortage across the region, state and country.
Final two candidates for DCSD post visit district, community
The final two candidates for Darlington County School District Superintendent visited the district Monday, spending time talking with local media, community members and district personnel. Like the two candidates who visited before them, Dr. Tim Newman and Dr. Chandar Anderson discussed topics such as what they could bring to the district and what attracted them to the position.
