American Red Cross assisting family in Darlington after fire

American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers are assisting a family whose home, located on Tuskegee Street in Darlington, was damaged by a fire. The Hartsville Fire Department responded to the blaze. The Red Cross is helping four adults by providing financial assistance for food, clothing, lodging and other essentials, and comfort kits containing personal hygiene items.

“Keep an eye on what you fry.” Stay in the kitchen while cooking.

Never smoke in bed.

Never let children play with matches and lighters, keep them locked away.

Plug both large and small appliances directly into wall outlets.

“Three feet from the heat.” Furniture, curtains, dishtowels and anything that could catch fire must be kept at least three feet from sources of heat.

Change smoke alarm batteries every year, unless it has a long-life battery.

Replace smoke alarms every ten years. Test alarms monthly
