Deacon Donald Joseph Cain

Funeral services for Deacon Donald Joseph Cain of Darlington were held at 12 o’clock noon Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington.
Interment followed in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc.

Deacon Cain was the son of the late George and Dora Cain Blackmon, Sr. He was born February 8, 1945 in Darlington County. He died on Friday, May 12, 2017.

He was a graduate of Mayo High School. He also served in the United States Army. He was a faithful member and deacon of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.

Donald was employed at Nucor Steel for 17 years until his retirement. He also worked for the Darlington County Magistrate as a constable until his untimely death.

Survivors are: his lovely wife, Rudean Lighty Cain; two sons, Chris (Michelle) Cain and James (Kristel) Bishop; a daughter, LayOntra Thomas; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Judith (John) Horne; two brothers, George Blackmon, Jr. and Michael (Mary) Blackmon; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Cain, II.

The family received friends at the residence, 2008 Leavensworth Road, Darlington.

Sherman Louis Barno, Sr.

Sherman Louis Barno, Sr. the only son of Willie Louis and Pauline Fordham Barno was born in Washington, DC, October 23, 1942. He was reared by his grandparents, The Rev. Samuel William and Ophelia Gary Fordham. Being a PK allowed him to live in several small towns in South Carolina moving often and meeting people who remained a part of his life for many years.

In 1955 Sherman moved to Darlington, South Carolina becoming a part of the Darlington County School District. He graduated with the class of 1961 from Mayo High School. Along with three of his graduating friends they journeyed to Kittrell Junior College in Kittrell, North Carolina. After Kittrell, Allen University in Columbia, SC became his home for a few years. At Allen he became passionately involved in music under the director of John Wesley Hunter. He sang and traveled with Allen’s choir until he was drafted into the United States Army. He continued to utilize his musical talents while stationed in Germany by organizing a choir and singing throughout the area.

After returning to Darlington, he began working at B.A. Gary Middle School and enjoyed the intriguing moments spent with young people. Although Sherman’s interests were music and choral directing, his first love was mortuary science. After serving an apprenticeship at Jordan Funeral Home, he attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since 1969 Sherman has been employed at Jordan’s as a full-time Licensed Funeral Director and Mortician.

Sherman began playing the piano for Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1955. He started with the youth choir and gradually began rehearsing with older youth in the church. This developed into a Community Choir that consisted of young people from several churches in the area. Eventually he became the Minister of Music with total interest in the organ, and remained in this position until his death.

He is survived by one son, Sherman Louis Barno,, Jr. and wife Maoula, along with their children, Kelsey McCray, Ethan and Zion Barno; his daughter Mrs. Shana Elizabeth Harrell and husband Dwayne along with their children, Jacoby and Jaden Harrell and Makel Barno; his sisters, Paula Barno Outlaw and Leigh Barno Wingate; grandson Jalen Barno; He was preceded in death by his son Michael Wallace Barno. Additionally, he is survived by first cousins who knew him as a brother, nieces and nephews, grand and great, who called him Uncle Sherman, and a multitude of those who thought of him as friend.

Viewing was held at 704 Washington Street, Darlington, SC, May 18, 2017, beginning at 8:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life was held from 6 until 8 p.m., 704 Washington Street. Funeral Services were Friday, May 19, 11 a.m. at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1331 South Main Street, Darlington, SC. Burial followed at Faith Memorial Gardens, Darlington, SC directed by Jordan Funeral Home.

Alva Jeanne Sanders

Alva Jeanne Sanders passed away on May 16, 2017, at age 70. She was born in Charlotte, NC and raised in Darlington, SC. She attended school at St. John’s High School and Florence-Darlington Technical College. She is survived by her husband Jack and his son; her granddaughter Courtney; her father and step-mother David L. and Ardith Garner; her aunt Irene Carrigan; and five brothers and four sisters. Family services are pending.

Cindy Baker Young

Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Ann Baker Young, age 64, died Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at her residence. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 19th in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and other times at 2573 Swift Creek Road, Hartsville.

Cindy was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Timothy and Doris Lofton Baker. She was the owner and operator of The Flower Petal and a talented floral designer. Cindy was often seen at Takis Diner in Darlington, enjoying her coffee and talking with people. She also enjoyed watching NASCAR, fishing, and most of all, watching her grandchildren play ball.

She is survived by her son, Trey (Tanjah) Hall of Hartsville, her daughter, Bridgette (Andy) Harris of Bishopville; her grandchildren, Chase Hall, Tanner Hall and Isabella Harris, a sister, Julia Courtney of Darlington, nieces and nephews, Lindsay (Brent) June, Blake (Rachel) Courtney and Dale Baker, a sister-in-law Debbie Baker and many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother Timmy Edward Baker and a half-sister, Barbara Cribb.

Betty Rogers Boyd

Betty Rogers Boyd, 91, of Darlington died on Friday, May 5, 2017.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 2 p.m. in Central Baptist Church. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Kistler Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Kistler Hardee Funeral Home.

Mrs. Boyd was born in Washington, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Nicholas Rogers and Lucy Gray Rogers. Mrs. Boyd was the “Comptroller” at Fitness World Gym and attended Central Baptist Church. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church and was a very strong woman.

Surviving are her children, Curtis Boyd and wife, Denise of Darlington, Kathy Boyd Norris and husband, Wayne of Darlington, Patricia Tilley and husband, Tony of Reform, Alabama, and Wanda Eason and husband, Ronnie of Gastonia, NC; her grandchildren, Tyler Boyd, Spencer Boyd, Conner Boyd, Pressley Norris, Andy Norris, Chuck Norris, Christy Nettles, Brittany Koenig, Amanda Kincaid, Matthew Tilley, Bart Tilley, Keicia Lynn, and Nita Ryan; her brothers, John Rogers of Mechanicsville, VA and Joel Rogers of Ayden, NC.

Mrs. Boyd was preceded in death by her husband, James Henry Boyd, Jr.; and by her siblings, Jake Rogers, David Rogers, Eula Gaskins, Loyce Rogers, Barry Rogers, Harold Rogers, and Estelle Anderson.

Rev. Billie F. Fryar, Sr

Rev. Billie F. Fryar, Sr., age 83, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2017. Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Monday, May 22nd in the Lamar Chapel at Belk Funeral Home; burial followed in Will of Faith Cemetery in Lamar. The family received friends one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home in Lamar.

Born September 2, 1933 in Gouldbusk, TX, Rev. Fryar is the son of the late Fred Fryar and Eula Mae West Morris. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corp, and then attended Piedmont Bible College. He was a member of the American Legion, and was the founder of the Area Rescue Mission now House of Hope of the Pee Dee. He was a member of West Florence Baptist Church.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Emogene Rogers Fryar of Lamar; his children, Janice (John) Kaess of Jacksonville, FL, Pastor Freddie (Kathy) Fryar of Rainelle, WV, Steve (Teri) Fryar of Thomasville, NC; daughter-in-law, Sara Fryar of King, NC; his grandchildren, Michael, Aaron, Hailey, Anna, Jeremy, Tabitha, Rebecca, Caleb, Danielle, Scott, Chris, and a number of great-grandchildren; his brothers, Robert (Karen) Fryar, and Dean (Peggy) Fryar; his sister, Betty (Joe) Devera; a special brother-in-law, Bud Rogers, and a special sister-in-law, Jackie Shealey.

Pat McLellan Chrisley

Beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend, Patricia McLellan Chrisley passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 in St. Cloud, Florida. Born on January 1, 1957, Pat was the youngest child of the late Samuel C. and Annie Dowling McLellan. She was a proud graduate of Clemson University and received a Master’s Degree in Education from Francis Marion University. She taught at Spring, Brockington and Spaulding Elementary schools in the Darlington County School District. Pat loved her family, friends and especially her Clemson Tigers. Pat’s proudest accomplishment was being an amazing mother to her two sons, Dana and Nick. Pat is survived by her husband Danus Chrisley, her son Dada (Angel) Chrisley, her brother and sisters: Eddie (Jean) McLellan, Carol (Wade) Jordan, Nancy Vivian, Marsha (Darrell) Johnson; her sister-in-law, Janie (Gary) Davis; her brother-in-law, Dale (Judy) Chrisley, her father-in-law, Miles “Smokey” Chrisley, numerous nieces, nephews and her dearest friend Fran Knotts. In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by her younger son Nick Dowling Chrisley and a brother-in-law, Paul Vivian. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hut, 1752 Harry Byrd Highway, Darlington, SC, 29532.
