Elijah “Blue” Pearson

Jordan Funeral Home, Inc. – Mr. Elijah “Blue” Pearson was born February 27, 1950, in Darlington, SC, a son of the late Rev. Thomas Pearson and Rev. Sis. Oree Howard Pearson. He departed this life on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.

Funeral services for Mr. Pearson were held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington.

Interment followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Hartsville directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc.

He graduated from Mayo High School in 1968 and was a member of the Hall of Fame.

Mr. Pearson started his work career at Nucor Steel Plant. Later he became employed at Dixie Cup (Georgia Pacific). He remained in that capacity for 34 years.

Elijah, “Blue “as he was affectionately called, loved sports. He coached many Little League Teams. He was still known to many as “Coach”.

He was very active in the Wilson High School Alumni Association where he was considered an honorary member.

Survivors are: his dedicated and loving wife/companion Barbara; son, Elijah Brandon Pearson; two stepdaughters of the home, Erica Hyman and Erin Hyman; three step grandchildren, (Papa’s jewels) Meki Hyman, Omeriahn McCullun, and Wisdom Eastling; sisters, Mary Wingate and Francina Hannibal; special cousin Rose Morin (Jack); brothers, Pearly Pearson (Lucille), James Pearson (Doris), John Pearson (Georgia) , Wallace Pearson (Juanita), Abraham Pearson (Diane), Willie Pearson (Bettie) and Nathaniel Pearson (Maria); one Aunt, Lurinia Bristow; one uncle, Poulet Howard; four sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; 3 goddaughters; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and very close friends.

The family received friends at the residence of his brother and sister- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Willie L. Pearson, 308 Wire Road, Darlington.

Eleanor Norwood Bonnoitt

Eleanor Norwood Bonnoitt, of Darlington passed away on February 22, 2017.

Kistler Hardee Funeral Home – Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington. The family received friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017 at Kistler Hardee Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1043 Syracuse Street, Darlington, SC.

“Sweet Pea”, as she was fondly known to family and friends, was born in the Oates Community. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Ella Norwood and EDell Norwood. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Phillips Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women. She shared her faith and love with gifts of cooking and gardening. She was honored with the UMW Rainbow Women Award in 2016. She was also a faithful member of the Kalmia Garden Club and the Keep Darlington Beautiful Committee. She graduated from St. John’s High School in 1950. After 26 years of service in various capacities, she retired in 1996 as the Secretary of the Superintendent of Darlington County School District.

She is survived by her husband, Marion Bonnoitt of 63 years; her daughter, Cyndi B. Blackwood (Jim) of Greensboro, NC; her sons, Ricky Bonnoitt (Penny) and Norwood Bonnoitt (Kim) all of Florence; her grandchildren, Dustin Ham (Kate), Gray Ham, Luke Blackwood, Elizabeth Jones (Phil), Mark Bonnoitt, Courtney Coker (Joe) and Callie Bonnoitt; her step grandchildren, Shannon Reed (Jim), and Jenny Blackwood; her great grandchildren, Jake and Tyler Ham, Coleman and Lucas Jones; her step great grandchildren, Kennan and Lilly Reed. She is also survived by one brother, Murry Norwood (Ruby); and three sisters, Lou Ellen Lewis, Betty Lee and Claudia Braddock (George); and three sister-in-laws, Jennie Blackmon, Judy Norwood and Jeanette Jordan; and a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, James Norwood, Lawrence Norwood (Mary), J.L. Norwood (Billie), Clarence Norwood, R.A. Norwood (Jeri), and Marvin Norwood; two sisters, Mary Yarborough (Earl) and June Abbott (Warren); and by two brother-in-laws, John Lewis and Bobby Lee.

Margaret Flowers

Belk Funeral Home – Margaret Sue Streett Flowers, age 90, died Monday, March 6, 2017 at the McLeod Hospice House. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 9th in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday evening.

Margaret was born in Darlington County on January 18, 1927, daughter of the late Lawrence Grayson Streett and the late Mattie Leona Williamson Streett. She worked for Dixie Cup in Darlington for forty years and always enjoyed being with her family and working in her yards. Mrs. Flowers was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church and loved her church family very much.

Surviving are her two daughters, Diane (Mike) Feaster of Darlington and Luann (Patrick) Holz of Fishers, IN, three grandchildren: Andrew “Andy” (Cindy) Casey, Carmyn Blayton and Alexander “Alex” Holz; four great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, a sister, Betty Warren of Darlington, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Joseph Flowers, Jr.; brothers James, Grayson and William “Bill” Streett and sisters, Mary Atkinson and Leona Lee.

William James Marcus Sr.

William James Marcus Sr., 62, formerly of Darlington, SC, lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday March 7th, 2017 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Jacqueline Muldrow Marcus, his children Quiana Marcus Wright, William James Marcus Jr., and Tamaren Lucille Marcus, and his five grandchildren Raphael Jr, Christopher, Jordyn, William III, and Sydney. Services were held at Boatwright Chapel on Main in Darlington, SC on Sunday March 12th at 3 p.m.

Barbara Jean Ritz

Belk Funeral Home – Barbara Jean Ellis Ritz, age 73, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017. A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 14th in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born June 2, 1943 in Charleston, WV, Barbara is the daughter of the late Rush Ellis and Mamie White Ellis. She worked as a seamstress and as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Barbara was associated with the Methodist faith.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Douglas M. Ritz; her children, Kerry (Julie) Ritz, Nedra (Todd) Jeffords; her granddaughter, BreeAnna Jeffords, all of Darlington; her sister, Joan Bowles of Seneca; her beloved nieces and nephews; and her childhood friend, Bonnie Crowder Burke.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bob, Jack, Emerson, Emery, Gene, Ron Ellis; and her sister, Hazel Wright.

Greta Ward Capers

Belk Funeral Home – Greta Sue Shealy Ward Capers, 73, died Sunday, March 12, 2017, at the McLeod Hospice House following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be conducted today, Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the Darlington Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Kevin Cauley will officiate. Burial will follow in the Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Capers was born in Breckenridge, Texas on June 25, 1943, the daughter of the late Mark Carlisle Shealy and Corey Odell Ward Shealy. After moving from Georgia, she graduated from Winthrop University. Later, she returned to school and graduated in Pharmacy from the University of South Carolina. She was a Child Welfare (Protective
Services) Caseworker for the Department of Social Services before becoming a licensed Registered Pharmacist in 1977. As a pharmacist, she worked in the family owned drug store on the square in Darlington, Central Drug Store, alongside her husband and father-in-law for over 30 years; she was later employed by CVS and Med Center Pharmacy until her retirement.

While attending the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy, Greta was actively involved in many pharmacy associated organizations including Alpha Lambda Chapter of Kappa Epsilon Fraternity for Women in Pharmacy and Editor of the pharmacy school newspaper “The Papyrus.”

Additionally, Greta was a past member of the South Carolina and Pee Dee Pharmacy Associations, past member of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and past fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.

In addition to her love for her chosen career in pharmacy, Greta was active in the local community as well as her church, Darlington Presbyterian Church. Greta was a charter member of the Darlington Professional Women and was selected as the Professional Woman of the Year in 1995. She took great joy in attending the monthly programs of the Darlington Study Club both as a member and past president. Greta was actively involved in the Pilot Club of Darlington for many years (member and past president) and was recognized as the Pilot of the Year for 1981 – 82 and was a recipient of the South Carolina District Pilot Area Leader for Public Relations. Greta was a charter member and past president of the Friends of the Darlington County Library. She also taught Sunday School for many years. Of all her community efforts, Greta especially enjoyed her role as a Girl Scout Leader for many years, during which time she received advanced leadership training and was a recipient of both the Outstanding Leader and Outstanding Volunteer awards. Greta was a past volunteer for the American Cancer Society, Heart Association, United Way, Easter Seals, Keep America Beautiful, and South Carolina Beach/River Sweep.

Nothing was more important to Greta than her family, whom she adored. Cherished memories include boating with family and friends, trips to the beach and river, and time spent in the company of family and friends. Greta enjoyed reading to such an extent that she has read thousands of books in various genres. Prior to becoming ill, Greta took great pride in gardening and planting beautiful, colorful plants throughout her yard. Paintings created by Greta will be treasured by her family always. Greta delighted in playing bridge with “the girls” every month.

Surviving are her husband of fifty years, Edward Allen Capers, Jr., of the home; one son, William Van Ward, III (Ann) of Darlington; one daughter, Elizabeth Susan Shealy Capers Hart (Daniel) of Greenville; one brother, Mark Carlisle Shealy, Jr. (Scarlet) of Hartsville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Adelaide Capers Johnson (Jim) of Greenville; six
grandchildren she adored and cherished: Jennifer Nicole Ward, Zachary Van Ward, Garner Allen Hart, Ava Grace Shealy Hart, Sophie Capers Hart, and Drummond Monroe Hart; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family received friends at Belk Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, March 14, from 6 until 8 p.m. In appreciation and recognition of the many hours of care provided by nurses to Greta, memorials may be made to the Susan Johnson Memorial Fund, c/o Darlington Presbyterian Church, 311 Pearl Street, Darlington, South Carolina, 29532.

Roy James Veitch, Jr.

Belk Funeral Home – Florence – Roy James Veitch Jr., of Florence, passed peacefully Saturday, March 11, 2017. Roy was born March 20, 1929 in Chicago, IL to the late Roy James, Sr. and Eva Flavan Veitch. He was a graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology. On August 23, 1952, Roy married Margaret Stateler in Park Ridge, IL. His work as a safety engineer for DuPont USA brought the couple to Florence, SC where they raised six children. Mr. Veitch was a devout parishioner of Saint Anthony Catholic Church. He and his wife welcomed many of the parish’s priests into their home. He enjoyed playing tennis with his friends and golf with his family.

Survivors include sons, Mark, Scott (Joye), John (Deb), David, and daughters, Marie Edwards and Teresa (Danny) Wilds. He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Kristen (Lee K.) Howard, Matthew (Bryson) Kennedy, Charlie, Christopher, Chloe Wilds, Maxwell and Jackson Veitch; and one great-grandchild, Margaret Bly Howard. He has one surviving sibling, Jean Bachmann of Park Ridge, IL. Mr. Veitch is now reunited with his parents, siblings, beloved wife, and their many pet dogs.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 15, at Saint Anthony Catholic Church, with a private internment following in Florence Memorial Gardens. A Funeral Wake will be held from 9-10 a.m. today at the church, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Saint Anthony Catholic Church, 2536 Hoffmeyer Rd, Florence, SC 29501.

Gloria Ann Flowers

Belk Funeral Home – Gloria Ann Flowers, age 66, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, March 16th in the chapel at Belk Funeral Home, with burial following in Darlington Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Born June 12, 1950, Gloria is the daughter of the late John Flowers and Elizabeth “Lib” Bryant Flowers. She worked as a district secretary for Bi-Lo until she retired. Gloria enjoyed cooking, spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are her two sons, Michael (Terri) Flowers of Lamar, and Ryan (Lisa) Flowers of Darlington; her grandchildren, Sam Flowers, Shay Flowers, Annalise Flowers, and Spencer Waters; and her brother, Randy Flowers.
