Swim season kicks off at City of Darlington’s public pool

Swimming season kicked off last week in Darlington with the official summer opening of the city’s public pool. City of Darlington government officials joined Sen. Gerald Malloy and Rep. Robert Williams to hail several improvements to the pool, including resurfacing the pool lining, installing a new high-capacity pump and new lighting, repairing the kiddie pool, and adding an ADA-compliant wheelchair lift so everyone can enjoy a cool dip in the water. The improvements (totaling over $40,000) were funded through a state PARD (Parks and Recreation Development) grant and city hospitality tax revenues. The Gandy Pool, named in honor of local community leader J.P. Gandy, is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., weather permitting. The cost is $1 to swim all day. This season, the pool will again be operated and staffed by Poolwerx. Free swimming lessons with Lillian Brunson will be offered June 25–27.
