South Carolina’s top legal group names a new president
Columbia – The South Carolina Association for Justice (SCAJ) has named a new President. Midlands’ attorney Hugh McAngus, Jr. of Chappell, Smith & Arden is taking over leadership of the state’s largest association of plaintiff lawyers. He will be replacing attorney Alex Cash, whose term has expired.
SCAJ has over 1200 members and is the state’s leading advocate for matters related to justice and access to fairness under the law. McAngus will bring a unique mixture of legal experience and policy expertise to the position.
“The Association’s work is vital to protecting our system of justice, and it makes a positive difference in people’s lives. The legal profession is much more than a job to me. It’s a calling, and I am honored to be serving as President of such an active and effective Association,” McAngus said.
McAngus is a graduate of University of South Carolina School of Law and currently leads Chappell, Smith & Arden’s Litigation team. His practice focuses on various areas of law, including litigation for motor vehicle accidents, trucking accidents and products liability.
McAngus has led several trial victories for personal injury victims. In addition to his trial level work, he has also briefed and argued cases before the South Carolina Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.
McAngus joined Chappell, Smith & Arden as a law clerk and has practiced as an attorney since 2006. Maintaining leadership positions in many professional associations, he currently is South Carolina’s Revitalization Board Member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ). He has also served on the Membership and Underride Committees of the AAJ’s Trucking Litigation Group.
At the SCAJ annual convention, several other attorneys rose to new positions of leadership. Thiele McVey of Columbia became President—Elect and James “Jay” Ward of Charleston was elected Vice-President with Richards McCrae of Rock Hill now serving as Secretary/Treasurer.
