Showdown in the Pee Dee III

A crop of promising South Carolina boxers mixed it up with rising talent from Pennsylvania and New Jersey at Saturday’s “Showdown in the Pee Dee III” event, staged at Darlington’s A.W. Stanley Gym by One More Round Boxing. Youth boxers and seasoned heavyweights entertained the crowd with 12 spirited amateur contests, and gained crucial experience that could sharpen their skills and improve their future prospects.

Special guest Jacquan “Da King” Townes, reigning WBF Cruiserweight Champion, said that even though he cut short his own amateur experience (citing a dislike for the required headgear), he believes these fighters will benefit from competitive ring time. “This is just like in high school with JV and varsity – JV is where you learn and get experience, and varsity is where you showcase your talents. It’s the same in boxing,” said Townes. “As an amateur, you can lose a lot of fights while you’re learning, and when you go pro, it’s a clean slate.”
