School board salutes students’ achievements

From Staff Reports

Student accomplishments were in the spotlight Nov. 12 during a meeting of the Darlington County School Board that was mostly spent in executive session.

Board members recognized Ethan Drew of Lamar for his first-place win in the S.C. Education Association’s “Read Across South Carolina” art contest.
When he won the award last spring, he attended Lamar Elementary; now he attends Spaulding Elementary.

In addition, three students at Hartsville High School were honored for winning blue ribbons at the State Fair’s student art competition.

Susanna Horton won first place in the 11th-grade 3D division. Mary Hannah Parker won first place in the 12th-grade photography division.

Fara James won first place in the two-dimensional division.

All three study under art teacher Jennifer Pietrzak.

Hartsville High School senior Emma Charles was honored for winning the S.C. High School League 4A Golf State Championship.

The board also gave quick and routine preliminary approval to a string of school policy changes.

The bulk of the meeting was spent in executive session, during which no action was taken, the board said.
