Representative James Smith critical of actions taken on solar bill

Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Representative James Smith recently met with solar industry employees at Summit Solar in downtown Greenville to discuss the recent events at the Statehouse.

Speaking with reporters, Representative James Smith emphasized that, “We must come together and find a solution that will move South Carolina forward and ensure that its citizens, and not corporate special interests, are put first. We need to eliminate the subsidies given to the utility companies who have betrayed the trust of ratepayers across the state. This week’s critical job-saving legislation was brought down by highly-paid, corporate lobbyists funded by the ill-gotten gains of SCANA and Duke Energy.”

“Lifting the cap on solar energy production will not only create – but save – over 3,000 jobs, as well as lower the utility rates for South Carolinians across the Palmetto State, which we all know are too high,” Smith said. “Now is the moment to stand up for South Carolinians. To stand up for the families who are living in fear of losing their jobs. To stand up for the ratepayers and move this state forward by putting the interests of the people ahead of the interests of corporate greed. It’s time to put partisan politics aside and put the people of South Carolina first.”
