Shirley Ann Jones

Darlington—Funeral services for Miss Shirley Ann Jones of Darlington were 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington. Interment followed in Faith Memorial Gardens directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc.

On Saturday September 15, 2018, God sent an angel to bring his beloved servant, Shirley Ann Jones home to rest.

Shirley, the daughter of the late Sallie McWhite Alford and Tommy Tedder, was born October 29, 1958 in Darlington, South Carolina. She was a 1976 graduate of St. John’s High School and attended Florence Darlington Technical College.

At an early age Shirley accepted Christ in her life and was a member of Tabernacle Holiness Church and later became a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Shirley enjoyed many years of employment at Champus Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Airlines, Assurant, and the City of Darlington. However, Shirley’s heart was in her art, crafts and sewing.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Sallie McWhite Alford and Tommy Tedder, brother William McWhite and sister Patricia Ross.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory: a sister, JoAn (Lynwood) Givens of Florence; several half brothers and sisters; nephew Travis Ross of Darlington; nieces, Melissa Bryant of Atlanta, GA, Juanita Frierson of Savannah, GA, Melinda McWhite of Darlington, SC, Lyndsey Givens of Florence, SC, Jada Givens of Rock Hill, SC and Jordan Givens of Orangeburg, SC; a God son Brandon Green; God Daughters Britney Green , Erica Sanders and a host of close friends and relatives.

The family received friends at 1137 Hollings Avenue, Florence.

Tommy Sturgeon

Darlington – Cecil Thomas “Tommy” Sturgeon, 85, husband of the late Haroldean A. Sturgeon of Darlington, died Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at McLeod Hospice House. A graveside service was held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 22nd at Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born in Darlington, Tommy was the son of the late Charlie Sturgeon and Roxie Adams Sturgeon. He graduated from St. John’s High School in 1950. He retired from James River, Dixie Plate. Tommy was a very active member of Central Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, served as training union director, and as a deacon. He could be found most days “fixing whatever needed fixing”.

Surviving are his children: Beth Hubbard (Reggie), Chris (Kim), Kevin (Martha), and Kyle (Teresa). He was a good, good papa to his grandchildren: Meghan Henson, Grayson Sturgeon, Caleb Sturgeon, Sarah Henson, Anna Henson, Wells Sturgeon (Nicole), Becca Eubanks (Steven), Reid Sturgeon, Madison Sturgeon, Cade Sturgeon, and Sydnie Sturgeon. He is also survived by a great-grandchild, Paisley Sturgeon; and a brother, Johnny (Liz).
Mr. Sturgeon was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Thigpen.
