Michelle Spires named Clinical Services VP for Agapé Hospice

Agape Hospice is pleased to announce the promotion of Michelle Spires to Vice President of Clinical Services with oversight of nursing and medical social services. Glovenia Michelle Berry Spires is a graduate of Walterboro High School. After receiving her Associate Degree in Nursing from Trident Technical College in 2000 she worked in critical care at Bon Secours St. Francis in Charleston. In her 17 years as a registered nurse Michelle has also gained leadership experience in emergency nursing and in skilled facility nursing. The personal experience of her mother and father’s death led her to hospice in 2006 and this is where she states she has found her passion in her nursing career.

Michelle joined Agape Hospice In 2011 as a hospice RN case manager. She was soon promoted to Patient Care Coordinator in the Walterboro office. Today Michelle’s sister, Noelle Berry, serves as the Patient Care Coordinator of the Walterboro office located at 113 E. Washington Street. Michelle has been certified in hospice and palliative care for 8 years and is one of Agape Hospice’s 30 certified nurses.

Michelle was promoted to Director of Clinical Operations for Agape Hospice and most recently to Vice President of Clinical Services with oversight of nursing & medical social services. Agape Hospice is a faith based organization with 18 offices serving every county in South Carolina. In addition, Michelle oversees the clinical operations of Agape’s two hospice houses, one in Columbia and another, celebrating its first year of service in Lexington. These hospice houses have 24/7 RN coverage with nurse practitioners or physicians rounding daily for the provision of intensive clinical interventions for pain and symptom management. Agape anticipates the opening of a 30-room hospice house in Summerville in 2018.

Theresa Younis, RN, BSN, LNHA, CRCFA, CEO of Agape Hospice stated, “I am so appreciative of Michelle, she consistently demonstrates the principals found in the nine fruit of the Spirit adopted by Agape Hospice as its core values. She is gentle, good, loving, and kind. She is truly a servant leader, her compassion, and concern for others is unsurpassed. Her 17 years of nursing experience and expertise benefit both the patients and families who we care for daily.” Younis continued, “Every day I ask myself: Is the decision I am making right now, responding to the hearts of those we serve such that they say, ‘Agape was a blessing’. I am confident the promotion of Michelle Spires to Vice President of Clinical Services will enhance and sustain our culture of high performance”.

This sentiment is shared by all who work with Michelle including Vice President of Quality & Compliance, Katherine Owens, who stated “Michelle’s dedication to our patients, their families, and her fellow team members is such an inspiration to all who have the privilege to work with her. She is passionate about providing the absolute best in end of life care. I see her working diligently day in and day out to make this happen.”
