Lady Falcons play in Cheraw tournament

While most students spent their spring break sleeping in late or tanning at the beach, the Darlington Lady Falcons participated in the Cheraw Spring Swing softball tournament.

The team started the tournament with a match-up against Class 4A Rock Hill and fell to the Lady Bearcats 4-3. Hanna Gainey was the leading hitter for Darlington, while Bailey Yarborough took the loss on the mound for the Lady Falcons.

Darlington bounced back in the second game with a 5-1 win over the Hickory Ridge N.C. Lady Ragin’ Bulls. Adrianna Weatherford got the win on the mound while Kirsten Stone went 2-for-3 at the plate with two homeruns and four RBI’s.

Class 2A and host Cheraw awaited the Lady Falcons in the third round and Darlington suffered a 3-0 loss. Weatherford took the loss on the mound while the Lady Falcon defense committed six errors that led to three unearned runs.

The Lady Falcons played Class 3A North Myrtle Beach in a consolation game and took an early 4-1 lead but fell to the Lady Chiefs 7-4. Yarborough took the loss on the mound while Haley Clark went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Lady Falcon head coach Tim Wiley said the team did not play up to its capability.

“Not a good tournament at all,” Wiley said. “Our weaknesses showed in a big way.”

Wiley added that he hoped the rest of the Spring Break would do the ladies some good.

Darlington returns to the field on Friday as they host Hartsville, with first place in region 6 3A on the line.

The junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity takes the field at approximately 7:30 p.m.
