Homes evacuated, road closed after fuel spill

From Staff Reports

A collision between two tractor-trailers carrying fuel Friday northwest of Hartsville forced officials to shut down part of West Bobo Newsome Highway and to evacuate some homes nearby.

The highway was closed between West Old Camden Road and Substation Road, officials said.

They said it was going to take “several hours” to clean up the spilled fuel and reopen the road.

The area evacuated included:
3509-3802 W. Bobo Newsome Highway
Santee Drive to Lynches Drive
All of Lynches Drive
Kirvin Drive to Winburn Drive
All of Winburn Drive
All of Lake Robinson Circle

The Red Cross set up a shelter for evacuees at New Market Methodist Church at 1909 W. Old Camden Road, Hartsville. One firefighter said about 1,500 feet of the area around the trucks had to be evacuated.
