Hartsville High IB Programme continues tradition of excellence

Hartsville High School’s (HHS) International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme again guided students to impressive performances this past year.

Fourteen members of the HHS IB Class of 2018 earned full IB Diplomas, a passage rate of 73.7 percent.

Of the 21 IB Programmes in South Carolina that had students attempt to earn a diploma, the average passage rate was 55.2 percent. HHS ranked fourth in the state in that regard.

Students who earn an IB Diploma also spend at least 150 hours volunteering, playing sports or working in the Hartsville and Darlington areas.

Additionally, 86 HHS IB students took 235 subject-area tests and scored four or higher 79.7 percent of the time, a rate that ranked sixth in the state.

Nineteen HHS students completed 38 “Extended Essay” and “Theory of Knowledge” essays, scoring an “A,” “B,” or “C” at a rate of 63.2 percent, which was ninth in the state.

Of note, an HHS IB student was one of only five students in South Carolina to score an “A” on the “Theory of Knowledge” essay.

Paula Alvarez, the IB Programme coordinator at HHS, said the IB Class of 2019 has 60 students, 18 of whom are working to earn a full IB Diploma.
The remaining 42 are IB Certificate students.

During the 2018-19 school year, a total of 214 students will be served by the school’s pre-IB and IB Programmes.

Hartsville High School earned authorization as an International Baccalaureate World School in December 2007.

In the past nine years, more than 60 HHS graduates earned a full IB diploma and more than 150 earned IB certificates.
