GSSM Wins 2017 Cross Country State Championship

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics’ Men’s Cross Country team won the 2017 1A Cross Country State Championship on Saturday, November 4, 2017.

“Winning a cross country state championship is a team effort. We saw the fruit of that after our regional championship where all five men were named all-region runners. We went on to have four of our five boys achieve all-state recognition, which is exactly what we needed to beat Dixie,” said Mike Rhodes, GSSM Residence Life Coordinator and Coach of the Men’s Cross Country team. “The hard work and determination this team displayed all season was fully rewarded with this championship. It feels good for us to be able to bring this home to GSSM.”

The team competed against strong runners from twelve other 1A teams from across South Carolina.

Members of the Men’s Cross Country Team are Michael Bertram, Kollin Campbell, Austin Geer, Noah Klimkowski Arango, Brendan McManamon, Landon Nelson and Richard Sandvoss.

In addition to an overall win, McManamon placed first in the meet with a time of 16:13.

“Our student athletes understand that the joy of learning does not stop in the classroom,” said Hugh O’Connor, GSSM Athletic Director. “They recognize that there are lessons to be learned through Athletics that can and will last a lifetime.”

GSSM President Hector Flores congratulated the team, “In addition to the academic leadership we are known for, these young men demonstrate the hard work, courage, and determination to compete hard that is embodied in the spirit of this school. We are very proud of them and their achievements.”
