GSSM Alumni Published in Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce that research conducted by Michelle Huang and MaryGrace Holmes Rainsford, GSSM class of 2017, was selected for publication in the Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science.
Huang’s research was entitled “Differences in Pragmatic Language Measures in Mothers of Children with Autism or Fragile X Syndrome” and Rainsford’s was entitled “The Synthesis and Characterization of Corannulene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks.”
“We congratulate both Michelle and MaryGrace on this accomplishment,” said Dr. Hector Flores, GSSM President. “Their success is a testament to our students’ research ability, our faculty’s mentorship efforts, and the strength of our research programs.”
Through the Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI), Huang and Rainsford spent six weeks during the summer between junior and senior years joining research groups at university and corporate research and development labs in South Carolina. They worked with their research mentors and Governor’s School faculty during their senior year to compile and analyze their research findings, prepare formal research papers, and present their work at the GSSM Annual Research Colloquium and at the SC Junior Academy of Science annual meeting.
Michelle Huang, daughter of Yue Yan Lin and Guang Hua Huang of Lexington, currently attends Stanford University in Stanford, California. MaryGrace Holmes Rainsford, daughter of Melissa Mitchell Rainsford and John Holmes Rainsford of Columbia, currently attends Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.
The Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science is an online peer-reviewed publication of the South Carolina Academy of Science. The Journal electronically publishes up to three volumes per calendar year.
