Groundbreaking of the Old Cotton Mill Memorial Park

Members of the West End Heritage Corporation joined friends, neighbors and Darlington city officials to celebrate a groundbreaking at the future site of the Old Cotton Mill Memorial Park. Fresh dirt has been unloaded at the site, and a concrete pad will soon follow. On that pad will rest the monument crafted by Blackmon Memorials to commemorate the history of the Darlington Manufacturing Co., which operated in Darlington from 1883 to 1956. Present for the groundbreaking were (left to right) Nelson Blackmon, Alex Gainey, Elaine Reed, David Vaughan, Howard Garland, Sam Grant, Curtis Boyd, Diane Kelly, Jim Kelly, Peggy Sheffield, Becky Lee, Douglas Lee, Bobby Kilgo, George Hutchinson and Jenny Howell. Bill Shepard, Mill Village historian and author of the inscription on the park’s monument, was unable to attend.
