Governor’s School site for 5K Charity Race

The Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville will be the starting point for a 5K Run/Walk scheduled for the morning of October 17, and the GSSM student organizing the event says participants will be helping local people struggling with often unspoken troubles.

“I started the 5k Run/Walk as a way to raise money and awareness for people with mental illnesses,” says GSSM student Kylie Fletcher. “I took a class in January on the different types of mental disorders. As part of the class, we sat in on a SC Mental Health Commission meeting, visited a Psychiatric Hospital, and met with official from Mental Health America and the National Alliance for Mental Illnesses. I discovered that mental disorders are not talked about enough and are underfunded, so I set out to do something to change this, and thus, I came up with the idea to start a 5k race in my community. I myself have suffered from depression, and I wanted to do some thing that would both destroy the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, and also help people that are worse off than I was.”

The 5k Run/Walk will be begin at GSSM on October 17 at 8am. Registration is $25 and all proceeds will benefit Mental Health America of Darlington County. To sign up online, visit https://governorschool5k.itsyourrace.com/Event.aspx?id=6322 or the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GSSM5kRace
