Falcons sweep road trip while Lady Falcons split
By Drake Horton
It was a road affair this past week for Darlington basketball.
Originally scheduled to play three games this week and all on the road; against Lamar, South Florence and Marion, both the boys’ and girls’ teams ended up having to play only two as the game against Marion, that was scheduled to take place this past Friday, was canceled due to a leaky roof.
The road trip was quite the success for the Falcons, as the boys went 2-0, outscoring both the Silver Foxes of Lamar and the Bruins of South Florence by a combined score of 167-88. Neither game was ever close as Darlington won both by at least 23 points.
In the first game of the week, Darlington crushed the Silver Foxes 97-41 and followed that win up with another convincing win over South Florence, winning 70-47.
Head coach Anthony Heilbronn, who is in his first season as head coach for the now 8-1 Falcons, winners of six straight, was pleased with the way his defense played against South Florence. “I was really happy with how we played South Florence, especially on defense,” he said.” We played great help defense to stop their guards. We were up 19 at the half and 27 going into the fourth.”
So what made that defense so good against South Florence? According to Heilbronn it was directing opposing teams to try and beat the Falcons from outside.
“We really emphasized help side when in man and being able to stop penetration, make teams beat us from the outside,” he said.
Both Tre’Quan and Kenyon Scott were the leading scorers against Lamar as each went for 18 and Ty Johnson was the leading scorer against South Florence, scoring 14.
Darlington Lady Falcons
For the Lady Falcons, the road trip was a bit of a humbling experience.
After cruising by Lamar 42-11, Darlington dropped its first game of the year, losing a heartbreaker to South Florence 46-40.
“It was a humbling loss for us,” Darlington girls’ head coach Brad Knox said. “We will continue to work to get better every day. You can’t take anybody for granted.”
This was the second time Darlington had played South Florence, winning the first matchup 50-24. The Lady Falcons’ win over the Lamar completed the season sweep of the Lady Silver Foxes.
The Lady Falcons are 5-1 overall.
