DCSD updates 2017-2018 school calendar

Winter break ended but unfortunately the winter weather did not. After canceling school Jan. 4-5, Darlington County School District has used its three inclement weather days for the 2017-2018 school year.

The state requires that school districts build three inclement weather days into their calendars. After the hurricane in September caused schools to be closed, DCSD is now entering mid-January with no scheduled make-up days left. If more days are missed due to weather the district will have two courses of action, depending on the number of days missed.

The end of the quarters will be pushed back due to the snow days, which will also affect teacher workdays and report cards. The end of the quarters will now be on Jan. 22 and March 27. Those days will also be early dismissal days for students to facilitate teachers grading and completing report cards.

As the designated make-up days, Feb. 16, March 30 and April 27 will now function as regular school days. The revised calendar can be found on the district’s website www.dcsdschools.org under calendar.

Also during the meeting, thirteen students across the district were recognized for getting a perfect score on one or more sections of the South Carolina Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) test. Those students were

• Ella Alexander, Carolina Elementary School

• Sam Peel, Carolina Elementary School

• Ashley Niu, North Hartsville Elementary School

• Gianna Bamberry, Darlington Middle School

• Caleb Dewittt, Darlington Middle School

• Victoria Rogers, Darlington Middle School

• Madilyn Johnson, Hartsville Middle School

• Hannah Jewell, Hartsville Middle School

• Teagan Lillian, Hartsville Middle School

• Malik Rogers, Hartsville Middle School

• Stella Tew, Hartsville Middle School

• Jakayla Johnsn, Hartsville Middle School

• Taylor Salazar, Hartsville Middle School

During board comments, boardmember Warren Jeffords said that he is looking forward to the coming year and the progress that he thinks the district will make.

“We’re starting off a new year and I’m hoping we have a really good year, everybody working together and that we’ll get this district back to where we need to be,” Jeffords said. “I think we’re on the right track right now and I feel good about where we are headed.”

Other board members echoed his sentiments.

During an executive session, boardmembers heard from consultant Dr. Rainey Knight at the continuing search for the next superintendent. They also discussed negiotions regarding ‘contractual arrangements regarding property and construction contractual matters’ according to the meeting’s agenda. No action was taken when the meeting returned to open session.

The next meeting of the DCSD Board of Education will take place Feb. 12, 6 p.m. at the conference center at Mayo High School.
