Cornelia McCullough celebrated her 100th birthday, Saturday, July 15 surrounded by family and friends. To mark the momentous occasion, McCullough’s family threw her a party at The Carolinian in Florence, where she lives.

McCullough’s granddaughter Charmaigne Ray talked a little about her grandmother while welcoming everyone to the party.

“She said that she didn’t want anything, she doesn’t like surprises, but we said that we were going to do something,” Ray said. “At the beginning, she said for us not to tell anyone her age. When it was finally okay for us to say she was 100, I just started spreading the news everywhere because I was so excited. I asked God for her to live to be 100 so I could witness that and he did and I thank him. Thank you, grandmother, for everything you’ve taught me and Happy Birthday.”

A friend of the family sang a song for McCullough before her daughter read a poem about her and the wonderful life that she has lived so far. A few of McCullough’s neighbors at the Carolinian said she was a ‘beautiful lady.’

Minister Laverne Mackrey prayed for the food and the fellowship, thanking God for allowing McCullough to have a long life and for always being with her.

“God we are so honored that you allow us to stand on this ground to see what you’ve done,” Mackrey said. “God you have kept her, you have been her strength, you have been her love, you have been her confidant, you have been her knowledge, her wisdom…God we thank you that she is alive and that you allowed her to see this great moment in time.”
