Cobras compete in Hokie Open

ROANOKE, VA- The Coker wrestling team traveled to the Berglund Center Nov. 5 for the 2017 Hokie Open, hosted by Virginia Tech. The event featured Division I, II, and club wrestling teams from the East Coast.

The Navy and Gold had five wrestlers compete at the Hokie Open, with Matthew Kieta, Luis Peguero, and Nathan Troutvine all earning victories.

Matthew Kieta led the Cobras by making it to the 149 consolation semifinals. In the round of 32, he defeated a Duke University opponent in a 6-3 decision. Kieta grabbed a technical fall over a Virginia Military Institute wrestler in 3:44 with a score of 19-1 to reach the quarterfinals. In the consolation quarterfinals, Kieta earned a close decision over a UT-Chattanooga representative 7-6, moving him to the consolation semifinals.

Luis Peguero had a round of 32 bye and earned a 7-2 decision over an unattached opponent in the round of 16.

Coker’s Nathan Troutvine kept up with Kieta on the day as he finished in the consolation semifinals as well. He was given a pass in the round of 32, sending him straight to the round of 16, where Troutvine earned a victory over University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s wrestler in a 4-2 decision.
