Brain Boosters Camp teaches container gardening

The Hartsville Library recently wrapped up another fun and educational Brain Boosters camp, as participants in the Container Gardening course took home several yummy vegetable plants they grew themselves.

Held every other Thursday from March 1 through April 26, the course taught homeschooled kids aged 6 to 19 all the basics of healthy soil composition, how to tell helpful insects (like the earthworm, ladybug, green lacewing, and praying mantis) from bugs that harm your plants (Japanese beetles, stinkbugs).

Instructor Christy Beasley, Nutrition Educator with Darlington County Clemson Extension, taught the class how nurturing plants from seed to a successful harvest can help them develop self-confidence, while also giving kids a new appreciation for all the hard work that goes into growing and making the food that ends up on their plates.

Students went home with a variety of vegetables and herbs, like lettuce, tomatoes, green onions, and cilantro planted in every manner of container, from milk jugs to canvas bags to Dr. Pepper bottles.
