A message from Senator Kevin L. Johnson

District 36- Clarendon, Darlington, Florence, and Sumter Counties

The second regular session of the 122nd General Assembly convened on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. This is the second year of this two-year session. Any bill left from last year and any bill that is introduced this year that is not passed must be reintroduced next year, which will be the first year of the two-year 123rd session. As you may be aware, we normally meet Tuesdays- Thursdays while we are in session. The session is scheduled to end on the third Thursday in May, or May 17th.

This session is off to a very slow start. We were out of session for two days during the second week due to weather conditions. Most of our work thus far has been in committee meetings. Some very interesting bills have come before the various committees that I serve on.

House Bill 3653, also referred as the Nuisance Bill, received 3rd reading in the Senate. It now goes back to the House with amendments for consideration.

I expect the issue involving SCANA/Santee Cooper and the nuclear debacle to dominate this session. Other major issues this year will be public education, healthcare, the state’s pension system, the teacher shortage and the state budget. I am sure other major issues will arise during the session. As the pace picks up I am sure that I will have more to report next month.
