Deacon Charles E. Jackson

Jordan Funeral Home – Funeral services for Deacon Charles E. Jackson of Darlington were held 12:00 o’clock noon Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington.

Interment followed in Darlington Memorial Cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc. of Darlington.

Deacon Jackson, affectionately called Chuck, was born on September 3, 1938 in Columbia, S.C. to the late Mr. & Mrs. Green and Anna Jackson. He died Thursday morning, March 16, 2017 at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Virginia.

Funeral services for Mr. Jackson were held at noon Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Darlington.

Interment followed in Darlington Memorial Cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc. of Darlington.

Chuck was educated in the public school system of Columbia, S.C. and graduated from Booker T. Washington High in Columbia. He later received his Bachelor’s and Masters’ Degree from South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, S.C. He pursued further studies at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia. He served as administrator at South Florence High School. After forty-five years of dedicated service, he retired from the Florence County Schools in 2013.

He was a faithful member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and served as a Deacon for more than thirty-five years.

Chuck was married to the late Mrs. Maxine Sawyer Jackson.

Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Anita Renee Faison; two grandchildren: Jonathan Micah Faison and Joanna Hazel Faison; a special son, Kennard Taylor; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family is received friends at the residence, 2135 South Main Street, Florence.

George W. Dudley

Belk Funeral Home – George W. Dudley, age 94, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017. Funeral services were held 1p.m. Wednesday, March 22nd in the chapel at Belk Funeral Home, with burial following in Florence National Cemetery. The family received friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Born January 30, 1923, George is the son of the late N.G. “Tony” Dudley and Eura Mae Stewart Dudley. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 2nd Armor Division under Gen. George Patton in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. He received three Bronze Stars and Service Defense Medals. He worked as a mechanical inspector for Celanese in Rock Hill for over 30 years.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma “Miz McKay” Dudley of Darlington; his children, Marilyn Dudley Rowley of the Kingdom of Tonga, Gwendolyn Dudley Teague, Victor Willard Dudley, and Jacquelyn (Brian) Dudley Mosely, all of Rock Hill; his grandchildren, John-Roby (Marti) Michael Teague, Noah Mosely, Elise Mosely, and Luke Mosely; his great-grandchildren, Anthony Teague and Alice Teague; his step-children, Maggie (Glenn) Kirven of Effingham, Wayne (Connie) McKay, Edward Prendergast, both of Florence, Michael (Sonya) Prendergast of Timmonsville, a number of step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Paul Dudley of Darlington, Ray (Arleen) Dudley of Florence, Wade Dudley of Darlington, and Ruth D. Iseman of Hartsville.

He was preceded in death by his step-son, Stephen Dewey McKay; his siblings, Christine Iseman, Trubee Dudley, Martha Iseman, N.G. Dudley, and James “Buddy” Dudley.

Robinson “Bubba” Miles

Jordan Funeral Home – Mr. Robinson “Bubba” Miles was born in Darlington County on May 15, 1928, a son of the late Mrs. Ella Miles. He died on Friday, March 17, 2017 at home after an illness. Funeral services for Mr. Miles will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Saint James United Methodist Church in Darlington.

Interment will follow in Wilds Quarters Cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc.

He received his formal education in the Darlington County Public Schools. At an early age he attended Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and later Union Baptist Church.
Bubba retired from Pee Dee Electric Coop after thirty-two years.

Survivors left to cherish his memory are: his devoted wife, Annie Byrd Miles; two children, Danny (Charity) Miles and Robin D. Miles; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; six sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family received friends at the residence, 312 South Center Road, Darlington.

Vera Mae Strickland

Belk Funeral Home – Vera Mae Sims Strickland was born on March 12, 1936 to Pressly and Wilma Sims. She entered Heaven’s gates on March 20, 2017. Vera was one of twelve children, with 10 of her siblings having predeceased her: Lillian Sims Williams, Nell Sims Young, Robert Edward Sims, Margaret Sims Koon, William Jennings Sims, Macie Sims Witherspoon, Mary Sims Bailey, Sarah Sims Poe, James Marion Sims and Earl Eugene Sims.

Vera was also predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, James Henry Strickland. She is survived by her daughter, Pam Strickland Buck (Seldon), her son James Timothy Strickland (Howard Nettles), her brother Fred Jackson Sims and many nieces and nephews.

Vera had a servant’s heart and through the years she served and cared for those in her family, her church and her community. She worked many years for the Darlington County Recreation Department and retired in 1999. She was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Darlington.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Elmcroft Heartland Village and Agape Hospice and to their workers for their compassion and excellent care and for making Vera’s final days comfortable and peaceful.

The family received friends at the home of Tim Strickland, 103 Georgia Drive, Darlington. Visitation was Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at Belk Funeral Home. The funeral service was held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Darlington, with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Phillip R. Arndt

Belk Funeral Home – Phillip R. Ardnt, a resident of Bethea Baptist Community died on March 19, 2017. A Memorial service was held at Florence National Cemetery at 1p.m. Thursday, March 23, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mr. Arndt was born in Decatur, IL, son of the late Harrison and Cuba Ferguson Arndt. Philip served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring as a tech sergeant after 20 years. Mr. Arndt enjoyed bowling and was a member of Hickory Rd. Baptist Church and Bethea Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Wigal Arndt and his siblings, Darrell Arndt, Gail Arndt, Theda Oye and Ray Arndt.

He is survived by his many nieces and nephews.
